1.
How do I
begin my search
for footage?
Canamedia does
not normally
charge a
research fee
because the
website offers
you the ability
to search for
yourself.
Simply click on
our ‘search ITN
Source
Database’
button to get
linked to ITN
Source homepage. There
you will find a
search option
where you can
type in key
words, exact
phrases and
specific archive
sources. The
more specific
you can be the
better the
results.
Too
many results?
Narrow your
search.
Searches
are not case
sensitive, so
searching on
'NELSON MANDELA'
or 'nelson
mandela' will
produce the same
result.
Search for exact
phrases rather
than keywords by
using the 'exact
phrase' option.
On the Advanced
Search page
enter a date
range with the
selects
provided.
Try the 'all of
these words'
option: entering
'Clinton
Memorial' in
this case will
search for
Clinton AND
Memorial.
Use the
'without' text
box on the Advanced
Search page
to exclude words
from the search.
If you were
looking for
footage of
Martin Luther
King other than
in Alabama, you
could type
'Martin Luther
King' in the
'all of these
words' search
box and Alabama
in the 'without'
box.
Too few
results? Widen
your search.
Use UK rather
than American
English when
searching. For
example, 'labour'
rather than
'labor'.
Use the star
key/asterisk (*)
as a wild card.
For example,
flood* will
search for
flood, floods,
flooding,
flooded, etc.
Reduce the
number of
keywords you
have searched
on.
Search for a
wider category.
For example, if
you were looking
battleship 'HMS
Invincible', you
could widen your
search to
'Falklands War'.
Check for
spelling errors
or variant
spellings,
especially with
people's names.
Consider plural
spellings of
words.
2. How do I
take note of the
footage I wish
to see?
When you are
conducting your
search, you will
get a list of
titles in the
first column,
the date in the
second and a
reference number
in the third
column. This
reference number
is the code you
should write
down if it is
the material
you wish to
order for
preview. This
number is
repeated when
you click on the
title to get a
description of
the footage in
greater
detail. The
number is found
in the top right
hand corner,
usually just
below the date.
This is also a
good time to
take note of the
source – i.e. if
material is
provided by ITN,
Reuters, C4
etc. This
information is
not found on the
same page as the
initial result
of titles, but
rather when you
click on a title
to get a detail
description.
Here you will
find a breakdown
of sources.
Just because the
initial title
page denotes the
source it does
not reflect the
total sources
for every shot
in the entire
clip breakdown.
This can only be
found once you
click on the
title for the
description
breakdown.
*Note:
Starting
September 2006
clips can be
viewed online,
currently, the only
material
available to
preview online
are the
showreels from
our
compilations.
You must
purchase a VHS
screener to view
clips from our
other libraries.
Showreels can be
viewed here:
www.itnsource.com/compilations/
3.
How do I
place an order
for a screener
tape?
On Canamedia’s
website in the

button ‘Forms’
which will offer

You can open
this file as a
WORD or ADOBE
ACROBAT format.
Once you have
the document
opened, fill in
as much
information as
possible.
You must include
your Fedex #

electronically,
then you may
email the form
to
itn@canamedia.com.

will it take to
deliver the VHS
screener tape?

from the time
you send in your
order form.
However, if the
footage you have
selected is

is a VHS
screener?

6. I’ve
screened the
footage and
found what I
need. Now
what?
It is IMPORTANT
that you have
clearly noted
the reference
number of all
the footage
clips you
require. You
must download
the same order
form that you
used for the
screener tape
which is found
by clicking the
‘Forms’ button
and opening
‘Order Form’.
Along with your
Fedex # and
payment
information, you
must include the
list of clips
you intend to
use, and the
types of usage
you wish to have
(i.e. worldwide
rights, TV
Broadcast
etc.). Once you
have completed
the form you may
fax or email the
it back to
Canamedia.

8. When will
my payment be
processed?
Canamedia will
process payment
prior to
delivery of
material.
9. What type
of payment is
accepted?
VISA, Mastercard,
Money Order,
Cheque and Bank
Wire. If
you are sending
a bank wire you
must add the
wire fee to the
original amount.
This amount
varies from bank
to bank.
10. Minimums
On Footage &
Premium
Libraries
There
is a 30 second
minimum when
licensing all
ITN footage with
a few
exceptions.
The libraries
that require a
60 second
minimum are:
Granada,
Survival,
Channel 4,
Images of War,
Tinseltown, Sam
Silver and Airtime
Television. Any
other library
within the ITN
Source has a 30
second minimum.
If
licensing
material from 2
different
libraries (One
premium, one
regular or two
different
premium
libraries) two separate
License
Fees would
apply.
11. When is a
license
agreement
issued?
We issue license
agreements once
we have received
both the Order
Form for the
Master tape and
the payment for
the License
Fee. Canamedia
will fill out
the agreement to
match the
requested usage
found on the
order form that
you filled out.
This will be
sent to you by
email of fax.
Without this
document you
have no rights
to the footage.
Once you
receive the
license
agreement, keep
it on file for
your reference.
No signature is
required on this
document. Once
you begin to use
the footage you
activate the
agreement and
are bound by it.
Please note the
license
agreement
applies only to
the indicated
program. You
cannot use the
footage in
another program
without paying
for a new
license fee and
obtaining a new
license
agreement.
12. What is a
declaration
form?
This form is the
final document
you will be
required to fill
out. This
document can be
found on our
website by
clicking the
‘Forms’ button
and opening the
link
‘declaration
form’.
Please fill out
all the fields
and SIGN this
form. You must declare
the total amount
of footage used
once you have
picture lock.
This total may
vary from the
amount agreed on
for the license
agreement. We
will refer to
the declaration
form as the
final amount of
seconds used and
charge the
difference.
We reserve the
right to request
you send us a
VHS screener of
the final show
with burn in
time code and a
shot list of
where the
footage used is
located, at your
cost.
13. Do you
have a rate
card?
As each
project/production
is different we
do not publish
our rate card
Pricing depends
on several key
factors:
¤ how the
footage will be
used: TV,
feature film,
corporate video,
multimedia
application,
CD-ROM, etc.
¤ countries in
which the
production/product
be shown
¤ duration of
the license
required
¤ how much
footage is being
used.
For further
information on
prices or for a
specific quote
for a project
please contact
us at
canamedia.com or
call us at
416-483-7446
(ext. 29).
There is a flat
rate of C$187.50
for a half hour VHS
screener tape
and a C$300.00
rate per 30
minutes for
dubbing and
facility fee
when ordering
the master
BetaSP tape.
When licensing
material there
is either a 30
second minimum
charge or a 60
second minimum
charge depending
on the source of
the footage. (ITN,
Reuters, Fox
News and
VISNEWS are 30
second
minimums.)
Key elements to
consider when
licensing
footage:
RIGHTS:
Worldwide,
Canada only,
World less the
US etc.
Transmissions:
unlimited,
single etc.
MEDIA: TV
broadcast,
Theatrical
release,
educational,
Video,
Corporate,
Non-theatrical,
Internet, DVD
etc.
LICENSE PERIOD:
1 year, 5 years,
in perpetuity
etc.
14. How do I
know if you have
clearance on the
footage I have selected?
Just because
footage is
listed on
Canamedia’s ITN
Source website
does not
necessarily mean
that we can give
you clearance.
First, if you
select a title
to see the
detailed
description you
will find a line
indicating the
source(s). If
there is more
than one source,
the source will
be listed above
the clip.
15. Are there
restrictions on
how I can use
ITN Archive
footage?
Canamedia
is able to grant
worldwide
licenses for all
the material
that ITN Archive
owns or
represents. From
time to time,
there will be a
few exceptions
and any
restrictions
relating to a
particular piece
of footage will
be highlighted
on the relevant
shotlist.
News events
occur anywhere
and at any time
and it is not
always possible
for news
organisations
such as ITN and
Reuters to get
their own crew
to the scene of
an event.
Sometimes TV
news companies
obtain pictures
from local
sources and,
consequently,
there are items
within ITN
Source that
Canamedia, as
the sole ITN
Source provider in
Canada cannot
license.
However, these
items are
clearly marked
on the shotlists
and Canamedia
researchers are
always on hand
to guide
customers
through the
copyright status
on all of the
stories
Please check
each document on
your search
results for the
source
information - if
this states
Reuters, RTV or
ITN then the
item is
available for
license.
Sometimes the
source recorded
is a Reuters
cameraman,
Visnews
originated, or
one of the
newsreel sources
- all this
material is
available for
license. Some
sources are only
available under
certain
conditions and
in specific
territories. For
example, some
BBC and NBC
material is
available from
ITN Source but
only if the
project/production
meets certain
criteria. Please contact us
for further
information.
Some material is
not available
without written
permission from
the owners or
original source
and this will be
highlighted on
the relevant
shotlist.
Finally, ITN
Source has a
duty to ensure
that footage is
used in a
responsible way.
Whilst we are
happy to supply
our material to
third parties,
we reserve the
right to refuse
any request for
footage if we
feel that it
might be used in
an inappropriate
way.
16. What are
the Collections?
Every imaginable
type of image
from a vast
range of
subjects can be
found within
ITN Source. For
convenience,
many of these
images are
grouped into
themed
Collections. The
Collections are
essentially
pre-packaged
samples designed
to provide a
quick snapshot
of what we hold
relating to a
specific
subject. There
are currently
around 250
Compilations and
the ITN Source team are
continuously
updating them
and producing
new
Compilations.
They are by no
means a
definitive
representation
of our entire
holdings but our
customers find
them invaluable
for idea
generation and
as a quick
reference
resource.
17. Famous
personalities?
If the clip is
of a famous
person such as a
movie star, you
may also need to
get permission
from the star or
his/her agent.
There is
normally no
license fee
attached to this
approach
*Please note all
License Fees are
non-refundable.
