A series celebrating the art and architecture of St. Petersburg on its 300^th anniversary.  Using fantastic collections from The Hermitage, one of the finest museums in the world. As a theme, the program takes the viewer on a tour  of the treasures of this “Venice of the North”.  From the Winter Palace, through wonders like St. Isaac’s Cathedral, the Church on Spilled Blood, the Peter and Paul Fortress to the doomed Tsar Nicholas III’s retreat at Tsarkoe Selo, architectural expert, Paul Davies, tells us how this surreal city was, quite literally, built by Peter the Great on a swamp; and explains the extraordinary achievements of the men and women who built the St. Petersburg of today.

Performed by the Italian Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Alessandro Arigoni. The symphonies of Mozart are of great importance in the history of music. In the last years of the 18th century, music was very much influenced by new developments in instruments and modifications to the composition structures.  The Italian Philharmonic Orchestra perform all of his 46 symphonies in the splendour of the Royal Palace in Torino, a befitting setting for this great composer's work.

One of the most popular jazz musicians of the last 50 years, the late great Stephane Grapelli had his first taste of fame in the early Thirties when he co-formed the legendary Hot Club de France jazz quintet with Django Reinhardt.  Grapelli, a self taught violinist, started playing professionally in various Parisian cafes and cinemas. This program is a fitting tribute to a truly remarkable jazz legend whose music will enthral future generations of jazz fans.
