Pet Friends
is a lively 26 episode television documentary series which is all about
enhancing the bond between people and their pets through good care and
through companionship. It’s produced by Soma Television Ltd. The series
focuses particularly on dogs, cats and birds.
In the series, viewers meet a wide variety of pets and their owners
who show how they live with, play with, care for, and generally enjoy their
companions. Programs cover a wide range of subjects including pet heroes,
pets for health, pet activities, pet care, veterinary medicine today, exotic
pets, pet activists, choosing a pet, to name a few.
A dynamic documentary style of reality footage and snappy editing typify
the series’ look. The viewers are rewarded with fabulous footage of everything
from pointers hunting down game, dogs chasing lures through elaborate courses,
people having their animals blessed at a special church service and a lot
more . Our cameras are always on location, showing real people doing real
things with their favorite companions.
Consultants included Dr. Desmond Morris, world-renowned zoologist and
author, Dr. Stanley Coren, University of British Columbia psychology professor,
dog authority and author, Chris Davis, expert bird behaviourist, the British
Columbia Society for the Protection Against Cruelty to Animals, and several
veterinarians including Dr. Suann Hosie, Dr. Anne MacDonald, Dr. Debbie
Archek, Dr. Margie Scherk and others.
The series has been developed in order to help people become successful
pet owners and to make a dent in the horrifying statistics of pet neglect
and euthanasia, which is the result of a general lack of knowledge and
understanding of pets.
Jenny Whittall with her lovely golden retriever, Lucy, hosts the show.
She has a lively, friendly style, and her strong interest in pets shines
through. She grew up in a household of pets, and pets have remained an
important part of her life since. Jenny has a long history in the broadcast
business as host, producer and director for a variety of programs that
have appeared on CBC, TV Ontario and Life Network.
Soma is the producer. In their twenty years of business, the
producers have developed a reputation, supported by more than 50 international
awards, for making programs that both inform and entertain. There programs
are regularly seen on Life Network, TV Ontario, Knowledge Network, and
SCN in Canada.. Their programs have also been broadcast on PBS
and Outdoor Life in the United States.
